Woods as a primary and secondary material
Restoration and conservation of contemporary work made of wood and its derivates
January 21, 2022
AULA MAGNA of the ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS OF BOLOGNA
The 7th day of Study on the Contemporary aims to face up to the conservation problems of wood and its derivates, used both as an expressive means of the artwork and as a support material in design. Some contemporary artists use the wood as a material itself, mostly raw and not very seasoned. Moreover, since the 19th, many wood derivatives have been introduced in the marker, which can basically be divided into plywood and wood fiber panels. You know that manufacturing techniques, the additives and adhesives used, as well as assemblies often performed not in a workmanlike manner and with all kinds of materials, noticeably affect the degradation processes and, consequently, the state of conservation of the manufactured products. Nowadays the range of products has expanded more and more; we can find them in contemporary art or in design like primary material or assembled materials. Woods and its derivatives are often considered poor materials with the risk to be neglected or replace. We need to remember that we find this materials in all the restoration sectors, but they are not always treat with awareness. Considering that the conference refers to the Contemporary, the goal is to circumscribe the topics by proposing interventions on artifacts created starting from the 1950s.
